Treating yourself with a solo trip this year? Locals tell us these five destinations are excellent places to explore on your own. They’re safe, have excellent public transit, and are full of spectacular solo activities.
Solo travelers <3 NYC. Anyone can find their niche in New York!
First of all, the city is easy to navigate. Locals tell us that the subway is safe to use. (But they also get that it can be intimidating at first—so they can help out with detailed transit instructions). And if you’re more of a walker, then NYC is great for that, too.
Plus, solo travelers will find that many of NYC’s treasures can be enjoyed alone. Wander through the city’s world-class museums, enjoy one of New York’s many beautiful parks, or pull up a seat at a Brooklyn brewery—no one will bat an eye if you sit at the bar by yourself.
Don’t worry—it doesn’t have to take two to tango in Buenos Aires.
Locals tell us that you’ll find spectacular tango performances throughout the city. Sit back, enjoy, and watch the pros tear up the dance floor! If you are feeling brave, then you can find a tango dancing class to try. Or, better yet, get some local recs for a tango bar.
Solo travelers will find plenty to explore in Buenos Aires during the day. Locals recommend visiting the lively and colorful La Boca neighborhood. Or—in the opposite direction—taking an afternoon to stroll through the impressive Recoleta Cemetery.
Going to Mexico City alone? You’ll be in good company! CDMX is packed with historical figures who left their mark—from artists like Diego Rivera to Mexican revolutionaries like Pancho Villa. (Locals tell us you can see a bullet hole Villa left at La Opera, a tequila bar.)
Mexico City is well suited for solo travel. Here, you’ll find over 150 fantastic museums, delicious street food, and, of course, the tremendously cool Chapultepec Park.
Wondering where to stay? Mexico City is a beautiful urban sprawl—so benefit from local advice. Our trip planners tell us that charming CDMX neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa are safe and walkable.
If you’re a woman traveling alone in Mexico City, take advantage of the metro’s women-only cars, usually at the front of the train.
Tokyo may seem intimidating. But this futuristic city is totally accessible for solo travel.
In fact, it often feels like Tokyo was made for adventurous individuals. Locals tell us that most restaurants have bar seating or long counters. Not to mention self-service restaurants, vending machines offering high-quality snacks, and cheap (but good!) bento boxes from 7-Eleven.
Solo travelers will easily navigate thanks to the Tokyo metro. Find peace at one of the city’s many shrines, wandering through the cherry blossoms at Ueno Park, or dash across the city’s famous Shibuya Crossing—you’ll find it’s easy to move through the crowd by yourself.
Pubs, parks, and public transit make London an excellent destination for solo travelers.
Worried about eating alone? Pull up a stool at one of London’s 3,000+ pubs and order a classic British meal like fish and chips. Determined to hit London’s coolest sights? Hop on the Tube. (But walk if you can—our trip planners tell us London is a great city to explore on foot.) Looking to burn off those British ales? Trek through one of London’s sweeping green parks.
And we haven’t even mentioned the city’s superb museums! Most are free to visit—solo travelers can return as many times as they want, without deferring to someone else’s travel schedule.
